Reduced mortality for sickest COVID-19 patients

Treating critically ill COVID-19 patients with drugs typically used for arthritis may significantly improve survival, a landmark study has found. The findings, which have not yet been peer-reviewed, come from the REMAP-CAP trial, which evaluates the effect of treatments on a combination of survival and length of time patients need support in an intensive care unit (ICU).

Crowdfunding has started at UMC Utrecht for a study to provide more insight into the immune system of patients with COVID-19. This allows doctors to better predict the severity of the infection and the disease course per individual patient. On the basis of this, they can also treat patients with the best available medicine, aimed at preventing further damage.

Can a tuberculosis vaccine reduce the risk of acquiring a coronavirus infection or reduce the severity of symptoms? UMC Utrecht is investigating this together with Radboudumc. A similar study with the TB vaccine was recently started in health care workers. The second study now starts with the effect in people over sixty years. 1600 elderly people can participate in the study.

4 sep: Mensen zelf voornaamste bron van ESBL-antibioticaresistentie

Onderzoekers van het RIVM, Universiteit Utrecht, UMC Utrecht, de Gezondheidsdienst voor Dieren en Wageningen Bioveterinary Research (allen behorend tot het ESBLAT-consortium) hebben eerder laten zien dat ESBL-antibioticaresistentie algemeen voorkomt bij mens en dier, in voedsel en in het milieu. De typen ESBL bij de mens bleken echter te verschillen van die bij dieren en voedsel. Wat de belangrijkste bron van besmetting voor de mens is, was tot nu toe onbekend. Nu blijkt dat de mens zelf de belangrijkste bron van ESBL-antibioticaresistentie is.
